Fourth International PIWI Wine Award taking place on 7 November 2014 in South Tirol 

Renowned German award continues to raise awareness for fungus-resistant grape varieties  

Frasdorf, 27 August 2014 – since its launch in November 2011 the international PIWI wine award has contributed significantly to an increase of awareness for the fungus resistant grape varieties and to a continuously growing number of PIWI wines in the retail. The prestigious award is going to take place at Laimburg research centre for agriculture and forestry in South Tirol this autumn and it is going to be the fourth of its kind. An independent jury consisting of oenologists, sommeliers (proved by Chamber of Industry and Commerce), wine consultants and gastronomy experts will taste the nominated PIWI wines in accordance with the PAR-method – which is known to be particularly objective and comprehensible – under the guidance of sensors expert Martin Darting. Wine growers and retailers can subscribe for the tastings until 19 October 2014. Tasting results, including sensory profile and rating, will be gathered in the extensive WINE System AG database which is easily accessible for winemakers, retailers and connoisseurs. 

The progressing climate change and unpredictable weather conditions increase the risk of fungal infections within the vineyard. Therefore more and more wine growers rely on fungus- resistant varieties, so-called PIWI grapes. These grapes allow wine growers to minimise the usage of specialized fungicides to an absolute minimum which saves time, reduces costs and has a positive effect on the vineyard’s ecosystem. The „PIWIs“ are mainly used by organic wine growers, but they also appear more and more in conventionally working wineries, who appreciate the special features of the fungus-resistant varieties.

The International PIWI Wine Award is hosted by PIWI International e.V and carried out by
WINE System AG. The award increases the recognition of PIWI varieties steadily and gives winemakers the opportunity to evaluate their wines by international comparison. Moreover, the award means an upgrade for the participant’s own production and it is steadily gaining popularity amongst retailers. Consumers also appreciate the tasting results as an orientation aid. The WINE System AG database contains the results and tasting profiles of each wine that has been tasted by the jury. Thanks to the many different data filtering options – such as origin, producer, grape variety, flavour or food pairing – it is easy to find the right product for every taste and occasion.

Rating in accordance with the PAR® System: The awards purpose is representing the diversity and distinction of PIWI wines by objective tasting results. The analytic part of the PAR-method mainly documents the origin, type, maturation respectively stylistic. The quality part of the tasting estimates analytically discovered characteristics like flavour, sweetness and acidity. Personal preferences of the jury have no influence on the rating. PAR-System is internationally recognised and allows a particular, objective and comprehensible assessment. In the end, the evaluation describes in detail how individual criteria conduce towards the result and final quality points.
