International PIWI Wine Award 2016: registration for prestigious PAR® quality competition in its sixth edition is open now

PAR tasting takes place on the 28th – 29th of October 2016 – application deadline is the 17th of October 2016

Frasdorf, the 20th of July 2016 – more quality, more transparency, more acceptance: International PIWI Wine Award is one of the manifold platforms established by PIWI International and WINE System AG to support fungus-resistant grape varieties and producers. Unlike many other initiatives which have been taken by this organization, discussions around viticultural, economic and ecological assets and drawbacks are not the center of attention during the two-day competition, solely the quality of the submitted wines should speak volumes. The tasting will take place on the 28th – 29th of October 2016 in accordance with the internationally accepted test procedure PAR, teams consisting of specially trained experts will analyze and assess every single wine.

As in previous years, we expect further growth of international participant number, not least thanks to the newly-established association representation in France: PIWI France. A growing number of producers, mainly from the organic sector, considers PIWIs to be the varieties of the future: they are more resistant to freak weather and climate change, they significantly reduce plant protection products use and they spare vineyard soil the necessity of additional tractor riding. The reason, why the Regent, Cabernet Blanc & Co. winegrowers are still fighting for the recognition, is partly bound up with the fact of bringing wines with quality suffering from high crop yields at the beginning of the PIWI movement. Matters were further complicated by the fact of unknown names and new sensory taste and aroma profiles.

As many of the young grape varieties are often more fertile than their established ancestors, careful quality improvement measures in the vineyard are required in order to keep the high level of wine individuality and quality. Recent years competitions have shown that accuracy in the vineyard and cellar leads to the great wines, also produced from “robust vines”. Transparency builds trust: analytical and very transparent test procedure PAR applied during the International PIWI Wine Award tasting provides facts to overcome winegrowers’, retailers’ and wine lovers’ doubts and prejudices about PIWIs. Taking the analysis of ingredients as a quality inspection basis, it also looks at the origin, way of making and suitability of submitted PIWI wines. Each product is considered by the three PAR tasters team on an individual basis and receives an assessment of its handcrafted and sensory quality, enabling to trace it in detail and to apply for the quality management afterwards. PAR quality inspection signifies reliable and objective assessment, detached from any taste standards or personal preferences, and enables retailers to provide purposeful and capable information based on the analysis.
